American white waterlily is endangered in Saskatchewan because it is known from a single locality. This location represents a western expansion for this species in Canada. Only one record of this species exists in the W. P. Fraser Herbarium from Saskatchewan. It is likely that this species may face danger of extirpation in the province.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Roots: rhizomes branched, creeping, cylindrical
Stems: runners absent
Leaves: blade 10 – 20 cm long, 10 – 20 cm wide, oval to round, base heart-shaped, venation palmate, principal veins 6 – 27, green above, green to purple below, hairless; stalk hairless or hairy
Inflorescence: solitary, floating, opening in the morning, 6 – 19 cm diameter
Flowers: fragrant; sepals 4, to 8 cm long, green or pinkish, lines of insertion on receptacle not prominent; petals 17 – 45, white or pinkish; stamens 35 – 120, yellow, widest below the middle, filaments longer than anthers; ovary compound; appendages at margin of stigmatic disk linear, 3 – 8 mm long
