Northern bentgrass is threatened because of rarity in Saskatchewan. It is regionally restricted to one general region of the province and most local populations are small. No threats are known or anticipated.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 4 – 40 cm
Roots: fibrous; rhizomes absent or very short
Stems: perennial, tufted, erect
Leaves: mostly basal, blades 0.2 – 2 mm wide, margin commonly rolled; sheaths hairless; ligule 1.5 – 2 mm long
Inflorescence: branched, 1 – 14 cm long, pyramidal, lower branches whorled, branches smooth and forking near the middle
Spikelets: 2 – 3 mm long, purplish
Florets: glumes 2 – 3 mm long, subequal; lemma nearly as long as glumes, densely rough hairy, frequently awned; awn 3 – 6 mm long, bent; palea short and nerveless or absent
