SPECIES DESCRIPTION

Height:

5 – 30 cm from short caudices or rhizomes

Roots:

rhizomes horizontal, slender, dark fibrillose

Stems:

pubescence white

Leaves:

basal 1 – 5, ternate, dark green, lustrous, petiole 1 – 10 cm

Leaflets:

terminal leaflet sessile, base cuneate, apex obtuse to truncate, villous to glabrous, margin crenate to serrate; lateral leaflets lobed, ultimate lobes 4 – 15 mm wide

Inflorescence:

flowers solitary; peduncle villous; involucre bracts 2 – 3, simple, similar to terminal leaflets of basal leaves, 3-cleft, oblanceolate to obovate, base cuneate, lateral segments unlobed, margin crenate to broadly serrate

Flowers:

sepals 4 – 7, elliptic to ovate, white, occasionally with a bluish tinge, abaxially hairy, adaxially glabrous; stamens many

Fruits:

aggregate of achenes; achenes not winged, densely woolly, beak straight and glabrous
