Western blue virginsbower is threatened because it is rare or uncommon in Saskatchewan. It occurs in two isolated areas in the province. No immediate threats are known but may occur in the future.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: up to 2 m long
Roots: rhizomes present
Stems: viny or trailing
Leaves: opposite, 2 – 3-divided into threes
Leaflets: 3, long-stalked, diverse in shape, base heart-shaped, tip long-tapered, more or less fleshy, 1.5 – 5 mm wide, margins saw-toothed or entire
Inflorescence: flowers solitary, long-stalked
Flowers: sepals 4, 1.5 – 5 cm long, lance-shaped to oval, violet-blue, long-hairy; petals absent or replaced by petal-like sterile stamens; stamens numerous, carpels numerous
Fruits: aggregate of one-seeded fruits, fruits long-hairy, styles persistent and feathery
Other: climbing via tendrils
