Tapertip flatsedge is endangered in Saskatchewan because it is extremely rare and is found in only one location. This species has not been reported anywhere else in Canada and the Saskatchewan population probably represents a northern range extension.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 20 – 30 cm
Roots: fibrous
Culms: annual, tufted, three-angled, edges rounded, straw-coloured, bottom half hairless or rough
Leaves: 2 – 6 per stem, basal, 8 – 12 cm long, nearly equalling or slightly longer than stem, 1 – 2 mm wide, V-shaped or flat
Inflorescence: heads numerous, 7 – 12 mm diameter, spherical; rays 1 – 3, 0.5 – 2 cm long; bracts 3 – 6, longest erect to ascending, 3 – 12 cm long, longer than inflorescence, flat to V-shaped
Spikelets: 25 – 50 per head, 4 – 7 mm long, ovoid, compressed; floral scales outwardly curved at tip, strongly 3-nerved, tip with a sharp point, yellowish-green to light reddish-brown, midrib light brown or greenish, hairless or sparsely rough hairy, gradually falling off
Flowers: 10 – 24 per spike, perfect; stamens 1; styles 3-cleft, to 1.1 mm
Achenes: stalked, ellipsoid, tapering to slender beak, three-sided, brown
