Cyperus acuminatus is endangered in Saskatchewan because it is extremely rare and is found in only one location. This species has not been reported anywhere else in Canada and the Saskatchewan population probably represents a northern range extension.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 20 – 30 cm
Roots: fibrous
Culms: annual, caespitose, trigonous, edges rounded, stramineus, bottom half glabrous or scabrous
Leaves: 2 – 6 per culm, basal, 8 – 12 cm long, nearly equalling or slightly longer than culm, 1 – 2 mm wide, V-shaped or flat
Inflorescence: heads numerous, 7 – 12 mm diameter, globose; rays 1 – 3, 0.5 – 2 cm long; bracts 3 – 6, longest erect to ascending, 3 – 12 cm long, longer than inflorescence, flat to V-shaped
Spikelets: 25 – 50 per head, 4 – 7 mm long, ovoid, compressed; floral scales outwardly curved at tip, strongly 3-nerved, apex mucronate, yellowish-green to light reddish-brown, midrib light brown or greenish, glabrous or sparsely scabrous, gradually deciduous
Flowers: 10 – 24 per spikelet, perfect; stamens 1; styles 3-cleft, to 1.1 mm
Achenes: stipitate, ellipsoid, tapering to slender beak, trigonous, brown
