Cyperus squarrosus is threatened in Saskatchewan because it is rare. This species occurs in a relatively large range in the province, but local population sizes vary.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 20 – 40 cm
Roots: rhizome, corm-like thickenings present
Culms: perennial, 1 – 2 mm wide, trigonous, glabrous or with a few subapical prickle
Leaves: 20 – 40 cm long, flat, margin glabrous or scabrous
Inflorescence: spikes 1 – 4, 1 – 2.8 cm long, ovoid to oblong; rays sometimes absent, usually 3 – 6 cm long; bracts 5 – 7, ascending at 30° to 45°, 10 – 30 cm long
Spikelets: 12 – 50 per spike, 5 – 30 mm long, linear, compressed; floral scales deciduous, appressed, stramineus to pale brown, midrib green
Flowers: stamens 1; styles 1 - 2 mm long, stigma 3-cleft, 3 – 4 mm long
Achenes: narrowly oblong, trigonous, puncticulate, purplish-brown
