Straw-coloured flatsedge is endangered because it is extremely rare and may have been extirpated from Saskatchewan. This species is highly regionally restricted in the province. Immediate threats to this species have been identified.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 20 – 50 cm
Roots: rhizome hard, short, swollen, with papery leaves
Stems:: tufted, stout, solid, three-sided, hairless or with a few prickles
Leaves: 20 – 40 cm long, 1 – 10 mm wide, flat, margin and midrib hairless and rough to the touch
Inflorescence: head compound, condensed to open, terminal, ovoid to cylindrical, spikes 1
– 4; spike stalks 3 – 6 cm long or absent; spike axis jointed at base, secondary spike axes occasionally present; bracts 2 – 6, ascending at 30° – 45°, exceeding inflorescence
Spikelets: 12 – 50 per spike, 5 – 10 mm long, linear to lance-shaped, compressed; floral scales 3 – 11, 3 – 4.5 mm long, may be deciduous, straw-coloured to pale brown, midrib green, 3 – 4 ribbed laterally, 3-ribbed medially, overlapping
Flowers: perfect, perianth bristles absent, style 3-cleft
Achenes: achene 1.5 – 2 mm long, three-sided, narrowly oblong, glandular dotted, purplish-brown
