Cyperus strigosus is endangered because it is extremely rare and may have been extirpated from Saskatchewan. This species is highly regionally restricted in the province. Immediate threats to this species have been identified.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 20 – 50 cm
Roots: rhizome hard, short, corm-like
Stems:: tufted, stout, solid, trigonous, glabrous or a few subapical prickles
Leaves: 20 – 40 cm long, 1 – 10 mm wide, flat, margin and midrib glabrous
Inflorescence: head compound, condensed to open, terminal, ovoid to cylindrical, spikes 1
– 4; rays 3 – 6 cm long or absent; rachilla jointed at base, secondary rachillas occasionally present; bracts 2 – 6, ascending at 30 – 45°, exceeding inflorescence
Spikelets: 12 – 50 per spike, 5 – 10 mm long, linear-lanceolate, compressed; floral scales 3 – 11, 3 – 4.5 mm long, may be deciduous, stramineus to pale brown, midrib green, 3 – 4 ribbed laterally, 3-ribbed medially, overlapping
Flowers: perfect, perianth bristles absent, style 3-cleft
Achenes: 1.5 – 2 mm long, trigonous, narrowly oblong, puncticulate, purplish-brown
