Tall larkspur is threatened because of rarity in Saskatchewan. It is regionally restricted to a few locations in the province and most local populations are small. Possible threats have been identified for this species.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 100 – 200 cm
Roots: fibrous
Stems: usually green, hairless, bluish, hollow
Leaves: on the stem, 15 – 20, stalk 1 – 15 cm long, blade 2 – 11 cm long, 3 – 18 cm wide, round, 5 – 9-lobed, hairless; ultimate lobes 5 – 9 mm long, 5 – 25 mm wide, narrow, tip tapered to pointed; midstem leaf lobes more than 3 times longer than wide
Inflorescence: unbranched, 40 – 90-flowered; flower stalks 1 – 3 cm long, short-hairy or hairless; bracts 2 – 7 mm long, 2 – 6 mm from flowers, green to blue
Flowers: sepals bluish-purple to lavender, short-hairy, lateral sepals forward pointing to spreading, spurs straight; upper petals lobed white-edged, lower petals covering stamens, 4 – 6 mm long; stamens many
Fruits: pods erect, 12 – 14 mm long, hairless to short-hairy; seeds wing-margined
