Prairie purple coneflower is vulnerable in Saskatchewan because it occurs in a limited range. The Saskatchewan populations represent a recent range expansion of this species. This species is usually locally numerous within an area.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 10 – 50 cm tall
Roots: taproot
Stems: woody base thick, persistent, with overlapping leaf bases; stems rounded, sometimes reddish, hairs short and stiff, sometimes nearly hairless below
Leaves: basal and on the stem; basal leaves several, long-stalked, 2 – 20 cm long, 1 – 4 cm wide, lance-shaped to elliptic, tip tapered, conspicuously 3-nerved; stem leaves few, alternate, short stalked, becoming sessile and progressively smaller upwards, lance-shaped to elliptic, conspicuously 3-nerved, tip short-tapered, rough-hairy
Inflorescence: solitary; terminal; bracts reflexed, in 2 series, 6 – 11 mm long, green, rough-hairy; receptacle with thin, cone-shaped, 1.5 – 3 cm tall; dry bracts on receptacle 11 – 13 mm long, spine tip 2 – 3 mm long
Flowers: ray and disc florets; ray 2 – 4 cm long, 5 – 8 mm wide, reflexed or spreading, two-cleft, purple; disc florets 6 – 8 mm long
Fruits: achenes 4 – 5 mm long; pappus a toothed crown
