Echinacea angustifolia var. angustifolia is vulnerable in Saskatchewan because it occurs in a limited range. The Saskatchewan populations represent a recent range expansion of this species. This species is usually locally numerous within an area.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 10 – 50 cm tall
Roots: taproot
Stems: caudex thick, leaf bases overlapping; stems rounded, sometimes reddish, hispid-scabrous, sometimes glabrate below
Leaves: basal and cauline leaves; basal leaves several, long-petioled, 2 – 20 cm long, 1 – 4 cm wide, lanceolate to elliptic, apex acute, conspicuously 3-nerved; cauline leaves few, alternate, short-petiolate, becoming sessile and progressively smaller upwards, lanceolate to elliptic, conspicuously 3-nerved, apex acute, rough-hairy
Inflorescence: solitary, terminal; involucre reflexed, in 2 series, 6 – 11 mm long, green, hispid-scabrous; receptacle chaffy, conical, 1.5 – 3 cm tall; chaff 11 – 13 mm long, apical spine 2 – 3 mm long
Flowers: ligulate and tubular florets; ligulate 2 – 4 cm long, 5 – 8 mm wide, reflexed or spreading, bifid, purple; tubular florets 6 – 8 mm long
Fruits: achenes 4 – 5 mm long; pappus a toothed crown
