SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 20 – 60 cm tall
Roots: taproot often exposed
Stem: perennial shrub, widely branched, woody at base, very leafy, producing numerous annual shoots; covered in a close, felt-like mat of long, entangled hairs, with resin, appearing bark-like unless scraped
Leaves: alternate, sessile; 3 – 5 cm long, 1 – 2 mm wide, linear to thread-like, midvein prominent, hairless to woolly
Inflorescence: heads several in terminal clusters, disc flowers only, 5-flowered; bracts 20 – 25 in 3 series, inner considerably longer than outer, distinct vertical ranks, to 1 cm long, straw-coloured with brownish midvein, prominently boat-shaped, hairless
Flowers: disc flowers perfect, petals yellow, 6 – 10 mm long
Fruits: achene to 5 mm long, slender, hairy; pappus of numerous capillary bristles, tawny, barbed
