SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 20 – 60 cm tall
Roots: taproot, often exposed
Stem: caudex woody; perennial shrub, widely branched, woody at base, very leafy, producing numerous annual shoots; covered in a close, felt-like tomentum of long, entangled hairs, with resin, appearing bark-like unless scraped
Leaves: cauline, alternate, sessile, 3 – 5 cm long, 1 – 2 mm wide, linear to filiform, midvein prominent, glabrous to tomentose
Inflorescence: heads several in terminal cymes, discoid, 5-flowered; phyllaries 20 – 25 in 3 series, inner considerably longer than outer, distinct vertical ranks, to 1 cm long, straw-coloured with brownish midvein, prominently keeled, glabrous
Flowers: disc florets perfect, corolla yellow, 6 – 10 mm long
Fruits: achene to 5 mm long, slender, pubescent; pappus or numerous capillary bristles tawny, barbellate
