Mud rush is endangered in Saskatchewan because it is rare and limited to one region of the province. No immediate threats are known for this species at present.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 20 – 60 cm tall
Roots: rhizomes creeping
Stems: perennial, erect
Leaves: basal leaves 1 – 3, stem leaves 2 – 6, blades 2 – 25 cm long, flattened and strongly appearing oriented with the blade edge toward the stem, to over 4 mm wide, cross-divisions incomplete; ear-like lobes at the base of the leaf very short
Inflorescence: terminal, branched or unbranched, heads 2 – 20, branches erect or ascending; primary bract erect, shorter than inflorescence
Flowers: small bracts at the base of the flower absent; tepals nearly equal, the inner slightly shorter than the outer, lance-shaped, tip pointed, green to brown or reddish-brown; stamens 6, anthers much shorter than filaments; styles surpassing flowers by about 1 mm
Fruits: capsule shorter than or only slightly surpassing tepals, abruptly contracted to a short beak; seeds with distinct tail-like appendages
