Wood lily is threatened because of rarity in Saskatchewan. Its occurrence is regionally restricted and populations are almost always locally sparse. No immediate threats are known but are quite possible in the future.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: to 1.2 m
Roots: bulbs chunky, scaly
Stem: hairless
Leaves: 1 – 5 whorls or partial whorls, leaves 3 – 11 per whorl, narrowly elliptic, sometimes linear or spoon-shaped, hairless
Inflorescence: umbrella-like cluster, 1 – 3-flowered, erect; flower stalks 2.5 – 10.5 cm long
Flowers: not fragrant; tepals 4 – 8 cm long, 1.6 – 3.2 cm wide, widely bell-shaped, somewhat recurved, tapering to a long claw at base, reddish-orange, occasionally pale orange, red or yellow; nectar guides above claws yellow to orange, maroon spotted; stamens strongly exserted, filaments same color as tepals, anthers dull maroon; pollen dark orange, brown, brownish-yellow or yellow; ovary 3-lobed
Fruits: capsules 2 – 6 cm long, 3 – 5 times longer than wide
