SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Growth Habit: aquatic
Roots: fibrous
Stems: flaccid, green to black or reddish
Leaves: submerged leaves opposite, 3 – 4 cm long, 3 – 4 cm wide, deeply filiform-dissected; leaves on the surface opposite, to 2 cm long, to 1 cm wide, ovate to lanceolate, base cuneate, apex obtuse to acuminate, glabrous, margin serrate
Leaflets: opposite, sessile or nearly so, 11 - 23 (9 - 13 in SK), lanceolate, acute to acuminate tip, acute to obtuse base, glabrous, serrate margins
Inflorescence: heads solitary (2), terminal, to 1 cm wide; peduncles 20 – 100 cm long; phyllaries 7 – 8, 7 – 10 mm long, ovate, green
Flowers: ligulate florets 5 – 8, 10 – 15 mm long, oblong to obovate, conspicuously nerved, yellow; tubular florets 10 – 30, 5 – 6 mm long, pale yellow
Fruits: achenes terete, yellowish to greenish brown; pappus or 3 – 6 awns, 13 – 25 mm long, barbed, longer than achene
