Small yellow monkeyflower is endangered because of rarity in Saskatchewan. This species is highly regionally restricted in the province. Possible threats have been identified.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Growth Habit: perennial, semi-aquatic
Stems: mostly creeping, weak, hairless or minutely hairy, rooting at the lower nodes
Leaves: opposite, sessile, 1 – 4 cm long, 1.5 – 3 cm wide, upper leaves usually wider than long, oval to rounded or kidney-shaped, base rounded, margin saw-toothed
Inflorescence: flowers solitary in leaf axils; stalks 1 – 4 cm long
Flowers: large, showy, irregular; sepals 5 – 12 mm long, bell-shaped, lobes unequal, angled, green, becoming inflated in fruit; petals to 25 mm long, 2-lipped, upper lip spreading or relaxed, throat more or less open, bright yellow, often red-spotted, hairy in the throat
Fruits: capsule 5 – 9 mm long; seeds brownish
