Monotropa hypopithys is threatened in Saskatchewan because it is rare and restricted to one small region of the province. Local population sizes vary. No immediate threats are known for this species.
 
SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Roots: rhizomes
Stems: 10 – 30 cm tall, frequently in clusters, pink, yellow or reddish, may be pubescent
Leaves: scale-like, upper leaves to 1.5 cm long, lower leaves smaller and thicker
Inflorescence: raceme nodding to erect at maturity; terminal flowers larger and with 5 petals, lower flowers mainly with 4 petals
Flowers: calyx lanceolate, erect; corolla 10 – 12 mm long, pubescent, saccate at base; anthers awnless
Fruits: capsule
