SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 50 – 150 cm
Stems: woody, erect, stout, unarmed or with a few scattered prickles
Leaves: alternate, odd-pinnate; margins of stipules rarely glandular
Leaflets: 5 – 7, 1.5 – 4 cm long, 1 – 3 cm wide, elliptic to obovate, margin coarsely serrate, glabrous, yellowish-green above, pale and at least somewhat tomentulose below; stipules rather broad, usually tomentulose
Inflorescence: flowers solitary or in corymbs; pedicels usually glabrous
Flowers: large, actinomorphic; hypanthium glabrous; calyx 5-merous, 1.5 – 2 cm long, pubescent, glandular; corolla 5-merous, 2 – 3 cm long, obovate, pink, occasionally streaked with red; stamens numerous; ovaries numerous, inserted in the sides of the hypanthium
Fruits: hip reddish; achenes 20 – 40, bony
