SPECIES DESCRIPTION
 
Height: 5 – 15 cm
Roots: rhizome woody
Stems: perennial, erect or ascending, mat forming, stout, sterile shoots numerous, hairless
Leaves: alternate, 6 – 15 mm long, linear to narrowly lance-shaped, round in cross section, succulent, smooth or finely bumpy, margin entire
Inflorescence: terminal, compact, several-branched, lacking bulblets
Flowers: ~ 1 cm across; sepals 5, usually < 4 mm long, subequal, triangular to lance-shaped, persistent in fruit; petals 5, 7 – 10 mm long, exceeding stamens, yellowish, may age pinkish; carpels 5, basally fused
Fruits: pod erect, opening along one line, grooved, tawny brown; beak 1.2 m long, spreading; seeds 5 – 25, 0.7 mm long
