Agaricaceae

40 (8a) Aroira and Miller recognize one genus of Agaricaceae, Agaricus, but Lincoff (Audubon guide) includes additional genera including Lepiota. Agaricus contains a large number of edible species mushrooms form which the commercial A. bisporus was bred. Typically Agaricus are edible and choice, with the exception of A. xanthodermus and allies, which are poisonous. A. xanthodermus bruises yellow, and all Agaricus species that bruise yellowish should be avoided. The other caution is to ensure the spores are dark, since the fruiting bodies can superficially resemble Amanita.
